The Social Outfit

We believe that by tapping into the creativity of refugee communities, it will lead to empowerment and social inclusion.

The Social Outfit (TSO) is a fashion label with a difference! Their clothing store, manufacturing room and sewing school opened in Newtown (Sydney) in 2014 with a vision to celebrate the creative talent of Sydneys refugee communities through distinctive Australian fashion. With a realisation that refugee women face the highest barriers to employment in Australia, TSO wanted to do something about it. Celebratory in design, they work together with industry and non-profit collaborators to run outreach workshops and fashion industry training in manufacturing, design and retail. To date, TSO has saved 5 tonnes of deadstock fabric from landfill and provided 23 jobs to refugees and new migrants, for 20 of whom it was their first Australian job.
