I caught up with Kurt Sines last week at Wilson Parking in Chinatown. We talked about his recently released EP, writing music and filmed him doing an acoustic version of his song 'Toys'...
When did you start writing music?
I went to a gig in grade 9 and watched my friend’s band. They were terrible. But much better than I was.
What was grade 9 like?
Grade 9 is the pinnacle of teenage angstiness .. before you develop a bit. Grade 9 is pretty bitchy for everyone but girls are crazy - they mellow out though. It’s weird seeing young girls act so aggressively and then they mellow out towards the end of high school.
You’ve just released your EP, what was it like recording that?
It was fun recording it because I was just in my bedroom - so I had all the snacks I could possibly desire. And plenty of space and time to work on it. Then I just recorded vocals at my friend’s place (who’s band was actually the ‘terrible band’ that inspired me to write music in the first place).
What was your inspiration behind your EP?
Lots of separate things. The overarching theme of 'Toys' was just me fiddling with new equipment in my bedroom and being obsessed with it because I loved all the different sounds. My songs are just stories or little moments that I come by in my day-to-day life. I think I’ll keep an element of electronic sound but I’m working on some more folky things at the moment.
Are you inspired by Mumford & Sons?
Yea obviously a bit but I try not to listen to them too much - if you listen to too much Mumford & Sons then you inevitably end up like them - it’s such an easy style to copy so I try to avoid it.
What is your song 'Wander' about?
It’s about a dream I had where all my friends betrayed me and I got really pissed off at them - so I wrote a song to subliminally punish them haha.
What do you want to do after you finish school?
I have applied to do law or music - I’ll probably do law and pursue music in my spare time. A parent friendly answer.
What has been your greatest achievement in your musical career thus far?
Putting out the EP definitely, I’ve been procrastinating that for a long time so it’s good to finally have a definitive body of work out.
Where can I buy it?
iTunes and... from me!
Why did you want to be part of Undress Brisbane?
Because it’s groovy. It’s a cross polination of all the facets of Brisbane underground fashion and music. When it all comes together it creates a web effect, which is good for everyone.
What can we expect to see on the night?
Lots of geeky electro pop and me and my friends awkwardly dancing on stage.
When's your next gig?
Undress Brisbane this Saturday! I'm also doing an opening for Tiger Town (10th November) and gig at Oh Hello soon.
